Point Nine

PERSONAL SENSITIVENESS

Saturn in the horoscope reveals the potentialities of conscious existence that man may build into the deeper fiber of his moral nature. Here is wisdom as the ultimate fruits of his spontaneous self-projection, and also in the practical reality of his experience his essential SENSITIVENESS as representing his soul in a sense turning into itself from time to time in order to give an account of itself to itself. Thanks to man's heightened susceptibility to considerations of right and wrong on this extraphysical level, the PLANET in addition becomes the principal INDICATOR of physical weaknesses or ailments whenever these are psychosomatic in their roots. As a consequence the negative SIGNIFICATOR of MOTIVATION must be given a prime consideration in any analysis of health, or of the various dysfunctions that threaten body and mind from day to day. In general its zodiacal place identifies the point in the chart where any inner instabilities or outer accentuations of hazard to the organism may be measured in their tendency to upset the equilibrium in self-consciousness, and in everyday terms this is DELINEATION of the conditions under which the NATIVE is most likely to find himself placed on the defensive or handicapped in his efforts to reach some particular goal.

Except for its participation in the NATIVITY'S pattern of TRINES Saturn in the case of Prince Charles makes only [368] the SEXTILES with Uranus and Mercury that give a subordinate strengthening to the COSMIC TRIANGLE, and the wide-ORB SQUARE with the sun that contributes depth to the chart's important TRIGGER. For a practical or everyday understanding of a personal SENSITIVENESS with this considerably underemphasized role, it may be noted that the PLANET lies in the HOUSE of POSSESSION, and the SIGN of ASSIMILATION and a degree symbolized by a merry-go-round. In the reduction of this horoscopic formula to a statement that is both accurate insight and simple explanation, in the framework of the over-all perspective, the astrologer may observe that (1) in CIRCUMSTANCES the continual turning into itself of the self-consciousness to give its accounting is a quite impersonal evaluation of what practical fruits of experience it is possible or profitable to retain as substance for a psychological maturity, (2) in FUNCTION a continual self-analysis is a similar determination of what realization should be built into the self's makeup and what should be discarded or shrugged off as of no consequence, and (3) in every passing or recurrent focus of the moment a parallel going round in the refinement of individual experience is a matter of the trial and error of self-expenditure in the NATIVE'S inclination to an almost extravagant self-dramatization. All of this can be summarized by saying that the prince will play the game of life quite happily, but will take no superficial nonsense from either people or events.

Although man's physical organism is neither the whole of himself nor the controlling factor in his make-up, the body with its social and spiritual relations nonetheless remains a primary barometer of his well-being on all [369] levels of existence. The nature of his general stamina always is indicated in the horoscope by the situation of the LIGHTS. If the sun is ABOVE THE EARTH in any HOUSE other than the TWELFTH or EIGHTH or is in the FIRST of those BELOW THE EARTH, it is said to be the HYLEG or the giver of life. In such an instance the NATIVE generally possesses a robust constitution and remains in relatively consistent good health. In any case he is likely to be little discommoded by what diseases beset him, and on the whole to live long and actively. The indestructible and irrepressible King Leopold III is a royal example. If the sun is not so situated, but the moon is in one of the five given segments of the HOUSE circle, the LESSER LIGHT acquires the HYLEGIACAL role. Thereupon the primary requisite for a basic robustness or reasonable expectation of years becomes a characteristically psychological enhancement of experience. There must be an almost constant exhilaration of some sort, or a well-defined if minor transcendence of all normal limitations of the flesh, and this is the INDICATION in the horoscope of Prince Charles. When neither of the LUMINARIES serves as the HYLEG the INDICATION goes to the ASCENDANT, and the condition of any everyday and reasonable longevity and freedom from disability becomes an accentuated involvement in events and relationships. Practical affairs must provide an unbroken stimulation to the interest, or offer a consistent and gratifying employment of all personal skills and capacities, if there is to be any appreciable well-being for a given NATIVE. The luckless Empress Carlota is an illustration.

In the case of bodily or psychological dysfunction and [370] maladjustment the SIGN containing Saturn, or the one opposite or occasionally any one of the same QUADRATURE, is taken as a horoscopic clue both to the nature of the trouble and to the particular therapy that is likely to bring amelioration or to effect a cure. When the difficulty is indicated rather obviously by the PLANET'S own SIGN it is then shown to be essentially physical or objective in its roots, and hence subject to successful and direct treatment if no degeneration or serious mutilation of organic structures has occurred. If the INDICATION, in view of the actual conditions, can be established more satisfactorily across the zodiac or at the SQUARE points the situation then is revealed as a psychological one at root and to be approached accordingly. Counsel must be given in the light of the HYLEG and the general PATTERN of the wheel, and the superficial symptoms as described in medical language must be translated into the astrological measure of those understresses or overemphases that go into the make-up of all conscious individuality.

The development of what has long been known as medical astrology has suffered a very great lag in the refinement both of theory and application, and in consequence the author in spite of his own considerable investigations and hypothetical contributions in this area has no therapeutic text either in preparation or contemplated. The traditional anatomical rulerships of the SIGNS are presented in the appendix as about the only generally accepted and reasonably reliable factors to take into account, and it may be seen in reference to these that the intestines can be a primary source of organic difficulty in the life of Prince Charles. The astrologer equipped with [371] some degree of formal discipline in medicine, and perhaps gifted very advantageously with strong intuitional faculties, may be of the greatest assistance to a physician. He can help especially when the dynamic side of horoscopy and its DIRECTIONS and the like are taken into account. Certainly every student or practitioner at the very least should have the knowledge of human anatomy and physiology required of a registered nurse, and at the present time the stellar analyst should refuse to pass any judgment whatsoever in matters of illness and malfunctioning except as it has adequate supplementation through the facilities of other and better grounded healing science.

The SIXTH HOUSE always reveals the immediate CIRCUMSTANCES of any possible illness, as well as any restrictive obligation of service to be rendered to others or exacted from them. This is DUTY in respect to self and in all human relations. The significance of the place of the PART OF FORTUNE here in the NATIVITY of the prince has been discussed under point six. Since no PLANETS are contained, the affairs charted by the mansion are never of vital issue in the NATIVE'S life. The LORD of the HOUSE is in the SECOND, and hence all matters of services given or demanded will tend to contribute to his fluid resources. This has been seen to be true also of partnerships and any elements of personal regeneration, shown by the SEVENTH and EIGHTH HOUSES. The cusp of the SIXTH lies in the SIGN of DISCRIMINATION and a degree symbolized by Indians rowing a canoe and dancing a war dance. Thus the formula will emphasize the characteristic high selectivity of the prince's actions and decisions as brought out here in connection with his sense of DUTY, and stress [372] his marked individuality as he truly is determined to row his own boat and if necessary deal with the problems of serving or being served with the positiveness of American primitives ready for battle. It can be reduced to the simple statement of accurate insight that he ever will see on beyond the immediate limitations of body or situation and never will hesitate to resort to drastic measures to enforce his will.
