IMMEDIATE INTIMACIES

The successful continuance of a human society depends on the divisions of labor among its members. Hence it is necessary for every person to have specific and in some instances very enduring ties with certain of his fellows in preference to others. The most common case of this functional association is marriage, or the approved relationship by which the physical differences of the sexes instrument a widening of experience at the very core of self-consciousness. And here perhaps is the most thoroughgoing complementation of individuality. The male in a sense specializes the genius of the WILL, and the female the essence of FEELING or the emotional self-realization. Normally, and primarily because of the basic distinctiveness, each is able to provide the other with a continual and a very practical self-reinforcement. Ideally the marital relationship as identified in astrology involves a legal tie, a common home and a habitual sexual intimacy, but any or all of these elements may be absent. Contrariwise any or all of them may become a fact in superficial actuality, and yet have no INDICATION through the horoscope. In consequence this union of two individuals in its proper fullness may be defined, for astrological purposes, as a permanent self-complementing impact made on the NATIVE by some other person through an intimacy or dramatic contact such as at its best has a life-long significance. The major ASPECTS that could be made by a counterclockwise movement of the moon in a man's chart, or the sun in a woman's, other than to Uranus, Neptune and Pluto in the order it would make them before it left the SIGN in which it is found at birth, establish the PLANETS to which such ASPECTS would be made as the basic marriage SIGNIFICATORS. In the most simple instance they identify and to an appreciable extent describe a NATIVE'S actual and generally recognized life partners.

The absence of a marriage SIGNIFICATOR does not denote the impossibility of a happy married life, or of a gratifying intimacy in or out of wedlock, but shows that any self-complementation of this sort must be a matter of more than a natural or unencumbered mating instinct. The marital INDICATIONS may have correspondence to single events and persons, or to cyclic repetitions, and occasionally there may be more INDICATIONS than events to correspond to them. Under rare conditions the assimilation may be to someone at a distance who not only does not reciprocate but may not even know anything about the matter. Parental and sibling relations are excluded normally, but not necessarily, and homosexual as well as heterosexual attachments may be involved. These variations in outer form and significance have no astrological distinction, and are revealed if at all through the social and psychological conditions of which they are directly or indirectly a consequence.

The marriage SIGNIFICATORS established in the horoscope of Prince Charles by the moon are Saturn by TRINE, Mercury by OPPOSITION and the sun by OPPOSITION. The form of ASPECT suggests that the first of these complementations [324] will be of the sort that helps him establish his own particular aplomb, in the basically personal equilibrium characterizing any chart under an essentially TRINE dominance. The likelihood is that this relationship will prove to be a character-forming romance, such as builds to enduring memories rather than marriage. There is little if any intimation that the individual identified here as providing one of the principal intimacies of the NATIVE'S life will be a Saturnine and Virgo person in any literal astrological sense. Rather the probability lies in the broader implication or HIGH-FOCUS significance of any of the PLANETS that become special SIGNIFICATORS, together with the essentially social FUNCTION of the SIGN containing them. This would mean a shrewd woman of great assimilative capacity, or somebody with real acumen on the one hand and an unusual disposition towards a full sharing and efficient appreciation of the common experience on the other. The relationship is likely to be not so much of physical stimulation as of maturation assurance, and a wide variety of PLANETARY pattern and combination of SIGN emphases in the other NATIVITY could meet the requirement here. The medieval astrologers always took Saturn's shrewdness as maturity, and assumed that an older person would be involved in that planet's INDICATION of a definite individual, but nothing of the sort need be even the average case. Astrology primarily provides an understanding of events, and only contributes a prediction of their occurrence through a process of deduction that is as fallible as the human mind in which it takes place. These considerations of marital potentiality will have a great deal of accurate correspondence to the [325] actualities in a given life, but all too often it is evident only in afterview. Their value is not in foretelling the future but in suggesting intelligent courses of action and reaction in respect to the basic intimacies, to the end that a NATIVE'S self-fulfillment may be helped to the best of possible consummations.

The intimacy potentials shown by OPPOSITION would provide particularly valuable complementation for the prince, since they offer strength in the species of equilibrium that can be most fundamentally at balance with his own. Hence Mercury as a marriage INDICATOR provides the most likely identification of a full and normal marital tie, and one that would serve the real challenge of the British throne. An inquisitively-minded young woman of marked creativity, who is particularly alive to what is going on and who possesses illimitable resources for meeting any particular emergency, would be of the greatest help to a partner caught up in the intensity of his own personal drives and in the sense of necessity to demonstrate his own particular competence. There can be a needed normality or uncomplicated naturalness in the marital relationship indicated by this ASPECT, to complement his highly deviate nature, because Mercury of the marriage INDICATORS reveals the most direct emphasis of everyday affairs or calls for the most simple form of self-expression. This of course is as true of Mars and Venus in almost as unconditioned a fashion, since intimacy has its ultimate consummation in the LINE OF EFFICIENCY. When Jupiter and Saturn are the SIGNIFICATORS the marital relation is more subjective, or is a matter of filtering the common experience through a psychological screen such as sharpens it on [326] the one hand but distorts it on the other. If the other LIGHT indicates a potential marriage partner the individual coming into the life is likely to become little more than an alter ego, or to end up with a feckless dittoing of the selfhood, and such an intimacy is the third possibility shown in this NATIVITY. Because anything of the sort would be incompatible with the real promise of the chart, and would not be supported in the framework of the NATIVE'S character under any normal unfoldment of his destiny, it probably would describe the surrender to an irremediable frustration in some self-debasing association if any actual intimacy were involved. But it also could show a final dedication of every personal resource to the career, on a higher level of transcendental romance with an other-self established in its own unique and disparate role of public significance.

The SEVENTH HOUSE as ruler of PARTNERSHIP charts the CIRCUMSTANCES or everyday conditions of marriage. The technique of HOUSE interpretation in the sixteen-point analysis is a consideration of (1) any PLANETS contained as showing a contribution of their species of ACTIVITY to its affairs, (2) the position of its LORD in that other HOUSE such as reveals the area of immediate experience to which these affairs must be subordinated and (3) the SIGN and zodiacal degree lying on its CUSP as a clue to the particularly individual tenor of its concerns. When a HOUSE contains no PLANETS its affairs are never primarily crucial in the life, and hence it can be said that Prince Charles is not likely to experience marital difficulty or marked trouble in his tête-à-tête relations with others. The LORD of a HOUSE is the PLANET ruling the SIGN on its CUSP. In the [327] prince's NATIVITY the lord of the SEVENTH is found in the SECOND, or the HOUSE of POSSESSION, and in consequence his marriage must contribute to his own personal resources. It must be pre-eminently a proposition of assisting him first as the Prince of Wales, or heir apparent, and then ultimately as king. With these conditions met, the playing of his role promises to be essentially happy and rewarding as far as feminine companionship is concerned. The SIGN of LOYALTY on the CUSP of the HOUSE suggests the fairness with which he will treat a partner, and be treated by her. When the hour and minute of birth are known exactly, as is the case in the present instance, there is additional light on the continuing and common eventualities in the area of self-unfoldment through the symbol for the degree on the CUSP, as here, the performer of a mystery play. Thus there is interesting confirmation for the fact that the NATIVE in his tête-à-tête relations with others is required to make his private life a public demonstration of the deeper values he must epitomize, until in truth he becomes the myth figure of his special position.

Every sort of PARTNERSHIP is ruled by the SEVENTH HOUSE, and is considered by the astrologer in identical fashion when it comes to interpretation. Some very transient proposition may be involved as in the instance of professional consultation with a lawyer or physician or other person where face-to-face or very individual interest is the crux of the matter and so momentarily a species of partnership. On the other hand all intimacies do not fall into this category, since factors of an entirely different sort may be responsible for the personal tie. Mothers and fathers come along with birth, and the relations with them [328] are shown by other HOUSES and require special consideration. Children have their own special HOUSE or HOUSES also, as do brothers and sisters as well as friends and so on. The Comparison of Horoscopes

When two people contemplate marriage or some form of partnership, or have consummated such a relationship, their potential service or disservice to each other may be determined through a comparison of their horoscopes. But vital as a preparatory step in this procedure is what is no more than common-sense judgment, quite apart from any consideration of the fundamental horoscopic affinities or antipathies to be found between the two wheels. This is an initial and over-all approach to each NATIVITY to see what the particular intimacy of relation might mean to the NATIVE, together with what potentials he might have for consummating it to his own satisfaction. Then only is it possible to judge the probability of mutual contribution to a common interest, and of rewards accruing and divided equitably enough and in extent enough to stimulate any continued full participation in the joint self-expression. On such a basis it can be decided whether or not the particular partnership is to be encouraged or discouraged, or whether difficulties can be ameliorated or eliminated and under what conditions. As far as he can the astrologer must work from the natal charts in the light of each NATIVE'S actual development of his astrological promise or [329] effective mastering of its exactions. All this of course is merely a further application of the techniques used to gain the preliminary perspective before analyzing the individual NATIVITY, and they have been illustrated in great detail in Part One.

With the preliminary orientation achieved the sixteen-point analysis turns to the comparison of the pertinent horoscopes to discover what, as viewed in combination, they may reveal by way of purely astrological potentials for mutual effort and shared fulfillment. The first step in the detailed procedure is to see if there is a proper balance between the two wheels in TRIPLICITY emphasis, and this is determined by looking at the two ASCENDANTS separately, and then the two suns and finally the two moons according to the TRIPLICITY in which the members of each pair are found. The ideal situation is when two of these three pairings lie in identical or harmonious TRIPLICITIES, and the other one does not. The equinoctial FIRE and AIR have harmony in the similarity of their origin, and this is expressed by identifying these six SIGNS as positive or as representing the fundamentally overt function of being, while the solstitial WATER and EARTH in parallel fashion are identified as negative with six SIGNS representing the fundamental covert function of being.

The one-point inharmony is a necessary stimulation to the intimacy. When it is established through the two ASCENDANTS the parties to the marriage gain a rewarding richness in their association because the day-by-day or transient difficulties that come up almost inevitably will help them dramatize their special gifts to each other, and thus further the mutual appreciation of a deeper or more [330] inward sort. When the cross stimulus is through the place of the suns by TRIPLICITY and there is an inherent clash of WILL, the necessity that they give way to each other continually at various points of crisis is the means by which their experience together gains its fundamental heightening, and so in the happier instances brings them closer through a necessarily enhanced respect for each other's integrity. When their diversity is sharpened through the moons by place in TRIPLICITY the tie between them most commonly is quickened through the diverging phases of their inherent creativity, and they tend to challenge each other continually to special achievement or some refinement of character such as otherwise might remain quite impossible.

If there is but one point of rapport between the two NATIVITIES in this cross pairing of the three most simple INDICATORS of personality self-projection, the marriage usually presents difficulties that must be overcome through exceptional inner adjustment. Special effort is necessary to make the outer relationships a very real adventure of a sort that can prove more than normally rewarding in everyday values. If the three pairs are all harmonious or inharmonious the possibility of mutual concord is apt to be defeated by too static a state of psychological overexaltation or undersatisfaction, and these cases require a more than normally exacting mutual self-expenditure if the relationship is to be at all gratifying to the given NATIVE.

Of the convenient example cases for illustration of partnerships, Robert and Elizabeth Browning were stimulating to each other through a cross conflict of TRIPLICITY at the ASCENDANT. Hence this most famous of all literary [331] romances flowered through problems of everyday situation, and perhaps primarily the family complications on her side. A similar balance in zodiacal emphasis between the NATIVES is found in the tie between Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. It was very much in the drama of superficial affairs in their lives, with another instance of family complication at the start, that they came closest to each other and so built towards their common fulfillment. The curious informality of the intimate link between George Sand and Frédéric Chopin is also of this pattern, and again it was the exigencies of situation that brought them together and for a full decade kept them involved with each other as tightly as any marriage ceremony might have done. An example of mutual stimulus through the solar inharmony is provided in the professional or business association of H. L. Mencken and George Jean Nathan as editors of the Smart Set and then editors and proprietors of The American Mercury. Together they achieved a breadth of impact on their generation that neither of them singly and afterward was able to duplicate. It was their willingness to work in harness, with an inherent dissent as far as each WILL was concerned, that contributed to their outstanding common achievement. In the royal romance of King Leopold III and Queen Astrid of Belgium the mutual quickening was centered in the realm of their moons. This fact was responsible for the heightening of their fundamental response in terms of the many inexpressible elements of the subconscious nature, and it possibly contributed to the tragic end of the relationship when she was killed in the car he was driving a year and a half after she became Queen. When there is the single compatibility by TRIPLICITY between partners the problems of the common relationship are brought more narrowly to a single focus of harmony as overt or covert, and astrological counsel may have to be much more specific to be helpful. In the instance of George Sand and her literary associate at the beginning of her career, Jules Sandeau, the emphasized common meeting ground in SCOPE OF EXPERIENCE as in contrast with the mutual stimulation or challenge is revealed as an overt co-operation by the ASCENDANTS. In consequence it could be expected that they would be drawn together and held in some measure by the sheer convenience of a shared horizon and the assistance they could give each other in their creative work. With this affair the emotional intimacies soon proved quite subordinate and the lack of compatibility of WILL gave them no inclination to work out things between them to any enduring end. On the covert side of man's intimate partnerships is another case of this TRIPLICITY stress, in the marriage of Harry Thaw and Evelyn Nesbitt. He was fascinated by his wife's early ravishment at the hands of Stanford White, and gradually he came to brood over it until at length he felt he was avenging his wife's honor and perhaps thereby realizing a more basic stability in his marital tie by the murder of the famous architect.

The single compatibility through the TRIPLICITY place of the suns in a partnership has an example in the long association of Helena Blavatsky and Henry Steel Olcott. This was cradled in the conception and launching of the Theosophical Society, and they had their common and overt WILL expressed in their effort to advance the cause [333] of a modern occultism. There was no basic rapport when it came to the handling of superficial affairs in the early days of the enterprise in particular, or in dealing with the supernatural or moon-touched factors on which they rested the whole validity of their claims.

The single sympathy of the moons by TRIPLICITY in contrast with compatibility of suns and ASCENDANTS marks the union of Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun. The covert tie between them was in the emotions, or a matter of common fellowship in the moods of unbalance that activated him, as she cushioned his tantrums and somehow gave him a sense of completeness in a deviate eroticism that the homosexuality about him had failed to satisfy. In the meanwhile there was no communion of WILLS and no seeing eye to eye in respect to the drift of events if indeed the megalomaniac would ever have tolerated any sharing of ideas or reactions in these other areas.

When no sympathy is revealed by any one of the three pairings considered for the general pattern of compatibility between two charts by TRIPLICITY, the basis of the tie between the individuals involved can be assumed to have no roots in the ordinary elements of experience through which people are likely to develop an intimacy for one purpose or another. This may indicate that other and deeper factors are the clue to the nature of a given relationship, and to the probable developments to be expected from it. Much more frequently however there is INDICATION that the ties have no vital significance, or are not anchored in any basic reality of being. Of examples where the analysis must go much more deeply into the personal attraction or more vital motive for the [334] association in view of the general prominence of the lives, Queen Victoria had a passionate attachment for Prince Albert, her consort. None the less she surrendered little of herself to any dominant mutual reality, and in consequence they both went their separate ways in a very interesting fashion. Of much the same cloth are the instances of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, where love was chosen over the royal role but where there was no escape from overshadowing events such as denied any full development of their common self-expression and basic social justification. The life together of Charles and Anne Lindbergh was twisted out of all usual pattern by the problems and events to which considerable attention has been given.

The contrary proposition when the three cross pairings between two horoscopes are all harmonious by TRIPLICITY, and there is the possibility of a static state of overexaltation or undersatisfaction, the question is whether there is or can be any appreciable actuality of partnership in any usual sense. Thus Max Heindel and Augusta Foss married under a covenant of continence, in order to conduct an occult work that they believed would be more spiritual if it was divorced from sex and the bodily appetites as completely as possible, and in their wholly overt case the tendency to overexaltation may have been very adequate reward.

The second step in the detailed procedure of comparing horoscopes in the sixteen-point analysis is to identify any emphasized co-operation of ACTIVITY potential between the two charts. This is shown by the PLANETS that at a certain position in the one wheel are also at the same [335] or opposite points of the zodiac occupied by PLANETS in the other, and within an ORB of exactness of sixty minutes of arc. The restriction of the cross relationship to CONJUNCTION and OPPOSITION or the INDICATION of the general equilibrium in experience is because the wholly geometric stresses established among the PLANETARY masses in the wheel, and represented by the true ASPECTS such as the SQUARE, TRINE and SEXTILE, reveal the distribution of personal potentials within the particular pattern of some geographic place and moment and hence are not factors of a common or generalized reality to be measured by the zodiac in any abstract fashion.

There are four cross PLANETARY ties between the NATIVITIES of George Sand and Jules Sandeau. Her Mars lies within the place of his Jupiter within seventeen minutes of arc in exactness and in balance by OPPOSITION with the place of his Mars within thirty-two minutes, and her Neptune lies in the place of his Mars within three minutes and in balance with his Jupiter by twelve minutes. Thus there was the mutual encouragement to creative INITIATIVE. With Jupiter emphasized in his case it was more personal and more a matter of immediate rewards as in claiming her for his mistress primarily, and accepting her contribution to the writing in incidental fashion, whereas under the stress of Neptune the important factor in her psychology was the sense of responsibility to her talents. This through the contact with him was quickened to the point that she adopted her nom de plume and mannish ways of living, and thus presented an outer symbol to the world of her self-discovery. He gained a satisfying realization of his own manhood and momentary male dominance, [336] and in the process he stimulated her growing appreciation of the power and potentiality of the novel as a social instrument.

In the horoscopic cross ties of Leopold III and Queen Astrid his Mars and Uranus are in CONJUNCTION with her Mercury within forty-two minutes of arc over-all, his Neptune is in OPPOSITION with her Uranus within fifty-four minutes and his Jupiter is in OPPOSITION with her Neptune within fifty-three minutes. With Mars and Jupiter stressed only in his case the marriage for him was a stimulus to his INITIATIVE and a fulfillment of personal gratifications, while with Mercury having stress in her chart only the relationship for her was more the opening of avenues of experience of essentially everyday fulfillment in parallel with what the alliance brought him, but probably with greater naïveté or broader and simpler joy of living. For them together there was the emphasis of both Uranus and Neptune, or the cradling of their marriage in SIGNIFICANCE that well may be another INDICATION of the tragedy of its end. It is quite likely that there was failure on the part of both to achieve a more enduring justification of the strong astrological linking.

Helena Blavatsky's Jupiter in CONJUNCTION with Henry Steel Olcott's Uranus within fourteen minutes of arc, and his Venus in OPPOSITION with her Uranus within sixteen minutes, are again an instance where an intimacy had to be fulfilled in more than a conventionally significant pattern because there is the common stress of Uranus in the charts. For her the outwardly casual partnership shown by Jupiter served a personal need in stabilizing her as the medium or channel for the invisible intelligences from [337] whom she drew her inspiration. For him under the INDICATION of Venus the factor of importance was the consummation of all the things to which through the association he had dedicated his life, and which in all respects he had derived from her.

In general in a consideration of these cross relationships the stimulation will be found to be more vital and to reveal a greater opportunity for enduring ties of major promise and dramatic self-demonstration when (1) the astrological relationship is the OPPOSITION and (2) the same planet is involved in both wheels. An outstanding example is Robert and Elizabeth Browning where the PLANET is Jupiter and the ORB eleven minutes of arc. Their romance inspired them both very exceptionally, and yet primarily it was a covert proposition of inner and personal reward. Their unified AWARENESS was quickened more than any common emphasis of superficial interest was strengthened. The stirring of each to the other was almost wholly subjective, or to a creativity rather than any conventional and common convenience. There is sharp contrast in the case of Max and Augusta Heindel where Jupiter provides the cross stress for their NATIVITIES but where the ASPECT with its forty-nine-minute ORB is the CONJUNCTION. Thus there was more of the immediate and practical contribution of each to the other, such as already has been seen to be overt in nature.

In the attachment of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor his Jupiter is in cross CONJUNCTION with her Neptune within eleven minutes of arc, and presumably his activation was the hope of some direct personal fulfillment whereas she quickened to a sense of special responsibility. [338] The overt emphasis reveals the necessity that they face their very practical problems in the strength they may be able to give each other. Hitler too acted under the Jupiter type of impulsion, since that PLANET is in CROSS CONJUNCTION of thirty-two minutes of arc with the Venus of his mistress. She may have responded to the possibility of accumulation, or a measure of participation in power, but he gained immediate assistance of a psychological nature for his utter turmoil of self and its intuitions or obsessions. The overt emphasis reveals his sense of need for an outer anchorage.

Mercury indicates the potential of H. L. Mencken's literary association with George Jean Nathan. Its cross relationship by CONJUNCTION within twenty-four minutes of arc is with the latter's Uranus, and thus the commonsense rationalization of the Baltimore sage and the greater originality or deviate sense of special opportunity of his partner are shown combined as a basis for their common achievement. Their Neptunes are ignored since their birthdays are too close for the ASPECT to be significant.

The marked originality of George Sand's contribution to modern literature was given sustaining stimulation or perhaps a thorough requickening by Frédéric Chopin as indicated by his moon in cross CONJUNCTION with her Uranus within an ORB of forty minutes of arc. On her part she restored his aplomb while nursing him to appreciable physical well-being, and this was a complementing encouragement.

Queen Victoria's Uranus in cross OPPOSITION with Prince Albert's Mars within seven minutes of arc charts the extent to which through his INITIATIVE he was able to [339] provide an instrumentation for so much of her INDEPENDENCE or ever-freshness of spirit in the transition of England from a mere European power to a global empire. With their birthdays only three months apart the CROSS CONJUNCTION of their Saturns has little significance.

When there is no cross OPPOSITION or CONJUNCTION between the NATIVITIES of people in partnership or contemplating some special intimacy, as is true in three out of thirteen examples of horoscopic comparison to which attention has just been given and of course in innumerable instances of the sort, the recourse is to an identification of what can be the sharpest astrological affinity between their respective over-all patterns in TEMPERAMENT TYPE or in particularly dominant CONFIGURATIONS. Thus the procedure, in a general way, parallels the technique in ascertaining the MODE OF SELF-INTEGRATION when major ASPECTS in the LINES OF SELF-DETERMINATION do not dichotomize the PLANETARY departments. The effort here, however, is not to find an emphasized separation or a basic division of labor within the self but rather to locate what in association between two people can add up as a strongly accentuated potential of complementing service to each other such as otherwise is indicated by the cross ASPECTS between the two wheels.

The horoscopic rapport indicated in this fashion can be of equal and even greater significance than the tie revealed by cross ASPECT, although it always requires more conscious and direct effort for its full consummation. An illustration is provided by the marriage of Charles and Anne Lindbergh. His horoscope is BOWL by TYPE with Uranus in HIGH FOCUS as CUTTING PLANET, and hers is [340] SEESAW pattern with Uranus emphasized in an exceptionally strong CORE OPPOSITION. Thus they are shown linked to each other in the INDEPENDENCE of spirit that Uranus reveals basically, and that has established them each separately and both together as very characteristic of the new type of personality gradually coming to dominate the modern world.

Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt are similarly linked by pattern, but through the department of SIGNIFICANCE as a whole rather than by one of its INDICATORS alone. This fact reveals the greater spread of individual expression and mutual co-operation. Uranus is in HIGH FOCUS in his SPLAY horoscope, and Neptune has similar prominence as CUTTING PLANET in her BOWL pattern. Thus his INDEPENDENCE and her OBLIGATION are brought effectively into cross association, and with the LINE OF SELF-DETERMINATION in SIGNIFICANCE emphasized by TRINE in both their cases there is additional testimony to the strength of their rapport. If this is to be seen in its HIGH-FOCUS terms, he contributes to her authority of self-expression and she encourages the experimentation that has been responsible in great degree for his ultimate stature.

In the case of Harry and Evelyn Thaw there is no PLANET in HIGH FOCUS in either chart, but in both instances the wheel is dominated by T CROSSES in CARDINAL SIGNS to link them in their tendency to live always in an immediate opportunism. They were stimulating to each other, and perhaps of mutual service in the refinement of character towards its self-fulfillment, since under her sun in POINT FOCUS it was necessary for her to be important and under his Neptune in POINT FOCUS similarly it was [341] necessary for him to assume some over-all OBLIGATION and even sacrifice himself in some signal fashion to prove he had done so.
