Point Sixteen
TRANSCENDENT FULFILLMENT
Pluto primarily represents elements that came sharply to focus in human experience with the great depression, at the threshold of the single generation that has been available for observation as these pages are written. Much that is put down concerning Pluto is on the basis of astrological theory by obvious necessity, and for the statements there can be little empirical validation although some factors are very evident. In general the developing characteristic of humanity during the past three decades has been an emerging species of world rather than narrow cultural or nationalistic citizenship, but this is an over-all tendency and it is not likely that the differences that have been dividing mankind so hopelessly will disappear or even be subordinated very noticeably until many centuries have passed. In all probability what will be found is the personal plussage that can be evident in particular individuals, whether only in the few or in appreciable numbers, and that of course will tend increasingly to serve an entire globe.
There has been more time to check the INDICATION of the two new PLANETS of earlier discovery, and what Uranus reveals by way of a transcendental pointing of the life and Neptune as a transcendental receptivity has turned up in the scattered out-of-time individuals who have made their exceptional contribution to human experience and [413] history. Because of these few psychological pioneers a measure of approach to the increased dimension of selfhood has been a common realization of all men. Thus the phenomenon of a universal consciousness has been evident for millenniums in the mystics and God-intoxicated individuals. But right down on earth, for every generation and in each locality, it has been necessary to identify something that while not actually unique and unknown before 1781 and 1846 is yet the legate and prophecy of it in a very practical sense. To meet this need of signification for use in every NATIVITY, Uranus is said to be the PLANET of INDEPENDENCE and Neptune of OBLIGATION.
There may be but a veritable mockery of the true or transcendental qualities in the life of an average person, even after nearly two centuries of rehearsal in the first case and of better than one in the second, but there always is the subtle link in race consciousness through to the deeper reality and in consequence the use of the new PLANETS has a certain justification in the charts of even very besotted creatures.
When it comes to Pluto, with a rational or subjective INDICATION similar to Mercury and revealing what might be considered the operation of a cosmic rather than a personal mind, what can be the legate and prophecy of the transcendent fulfillment has long been dramatized through the religious ideal and the experience known even to a pagan Plotinus as the transport. The efforts of some such inspired and dedicated person to serve humanity have come to be familiar generally as messiahship, or an outward manifestation of divine activation that lesser personality can experience vicariously and indeed even [413] demonstrate if by no more than perverting it outrageously. To achieve the spread in everyday realization from true mystic exaltation to crude physical debasement, it is convenient to identify Pluto as the PLANET of OBSESSION, and to explain that it reveals the extent to which a given person may be caught up in an idea that for better or worse is larger than any notion he could create or entertain out of his own resources.
Actually any outreach in the global dimensions of the LINE OF SIGNIFICANCE is necessarily in an ideal or transcendental fashion, and it has its best conventional or legate manifestation in a self-integrated philosophy of life. With the achievement of any psychological stature this becomes a conscious explanation to the self for some characteristic uniqueness of being. In the form of an accepted self-importance it is a commonplace among occultists, as in the individual's belief that he is the reincarnation of somebody of consequence in past times, but what tends less to megalomania although in essence the same phenomenon of self-encouragement towards achievement is found in modern science where research workers such as Isaac Newton will realize in terms of the famous phrase that they stand on the shoulders of giants or manage to catch up with racial progress and to carry it forward. Here is OBSESSION of the constructive sort. It may well be that a man as yet unobsessed with something other than his own private resources in prejudice has yet to make his first move into the global citizenship now shaping itself around the world.
Pluto in the horoscope of Prince Charles provides the greatest dynamic strength of the wheel through the TRIGGER [415] ASPECT with the sun. As the applying PLANET it shows that the OBSESSION with something greater than mere personal identity and its situation is the primary stimulus or basic whiplash in every act or reaction other than the wholly subordinate ones dismissed to automaticity. In over-all perspective it has been seen that here perhaps is a legate manifestation of the global citizenship to come, since the testimony is against every sort of surrender of selfhood to exterior ideas or influences. Instead there is astrological encouragement for every enlarged dimension of the personality that can be effected entirely in its own terms. The power of the triggering SQUARE is accentuated by the DIGNITIES of the PLANET as RISING and STATIONARY. Thus there is consistent support for heightened individuality of the most self-stabilizing sort. The TRIGGER operates through the WILL out of the special matrix or womb of the being, and the further accentuation of its efficacy is to be seen in the counterclockwise spraying of Pluto's exceptionally strong ASPECTS through the signs from Libra through Sagittarius as a very unique feature of this natal map as a whole. Attention has been given to Pluto's TRINE relationship in connection with the COSMIC TRIANGLE.
In horoscope interpretation in general the essentially transcendental INDICATIONS of Pluto are shown by its major ASPECTS with the positive and negative INDICATORS of the department of SIGNIFICANCE.
PLUTO IN NO MAJOR ASPECT WITH EITHER URANUS OR NEPTUNE indicates a fundamental insensitivity to the greater dimensions of the modern or global society. This does not mean an inability to participate in the opportunities [416] of life today, or a failure to appreciate the extraordinary achievements of the current technology and intellectual speculation, but rather a species of exemption from any necessity to shoulder any part of the expanding responsibilities. Instead there is the chance to concentrate on narrower and more immediately personal matters, and thus to help preserve the older values and ways of self-expression such as still must provide the principal strength of human personality. There is danger here of self-diffusion if the NATIVE does not take more than a normal interest in his own intimate affairs, but there is also the chance for more than usual freedom in self-discovery. An illustration is found in the horoscope of Queen Elizabeth II, whose basic task is to maintain a wholly symbolical bond of unity among the members of the British Commonwealth of Nations. The new form of the old empire was established under the influence of Pluto, and the emphasis on the more traditional stabilities in her case well dramatizes the continuing great need for the older excellencies. They alone can be a present sustainment for the future for which as yet there is no appreciable precedent.
PLUTO AND URANUS IN A CONJUNCTION ASPECT indicate a hair-trigger readiness to throw the energies and resources of self into any or every cause or project that might promise new or renewed release of the spirit. The philosophy of life tends to sharp rationalization in achieving the complete self-dedication required. Luther Burbank provides a case when his horoscope is studied in the light of his surviving influence, and when that is done there is light on what is involved in the reconciliation of shifting [417] hypotheses and what real cosmic insight is needed for the continuing development of plant genetics.
PLUTO AND NEPTUNE IN A CONJUNCTION ASPECT indicate an inescapable sense of necessity to throw the energies and resources of self into a cause or project that may provide persisting justification for the being. The philosophy of life involves some sharp rationalization of the need to bring others to common self-dedication. An example is provided by the chart of President Eisenhower, who built his reputation very largely on his gift for bringing individuals to the point of working together harmoniously in at least the immediate situation at hand.
PLUTO AND URANUS IN A SEXTILE ASPECT indicate an almost insensate eagerness to further the world's regeneration, or to contribute to the tangible improvement of every lesser milieu in which the NATIVE may find himself. The philosophy of life involves some effective rationalization of the means by which the particular end may be gained. An example is supplied by the natal wheel of Mohandas Gandhi, His achievement in winning independence for India and Pakistan has been seen to be the result of the urge to human betterment that he dramatized in his own personal life and suffering, and identified as the power of the idea explained in the concept of satyagraha.
PLUTO AND NEPTUNE IN A SEXTILE ASPECT indicate an inescapable call to serve the various projects that men have launched for improving the lot for mankind, or for enabling people at large to achieve their true individual destiny, and the philosophy of life involves some sharp rationalization of the necessity that everyone somehow [418] justify himself through a personal accomplishment. An illustration is found in the horoscope of Prince Charles, and one again in the natal map of Luther Burbank as particularly descriptive of his efforts to harness the processes of evolution in real anticipation of a new order.
PLUTO AND URANUS IN A SQUARE ASPECT indicate an uncompromising assertion of the physical and psychological freedom of the self for finding and demonstrating its own justification, and the philosophy of life involves a highly rationalized respect for personality as fundamental to any genuine self-realization. An example is provided by the NATIVITY of Mary Garden, whose deliberately temperamental antics no less than her singing and acting competency created the attention and respect for her individuality in a fashion very much a scandal at the time.
PLUTO AND NEPTUNE IN A SQUARE ASPECT indicate an inescapable determination to achieve a self-justification by winning a reasonably significant place in the general scheme of things, whether in larger or smaller dimensions, and the philosophy of life involves some sharp rationalization of individual sacrifice as the sole basis for self-fulfillment. An illustration is available in the horoscope of Prince Albert, whose tireless efforts for the British people were framed in his very great care not to overstep his bounds or in anyway obscure the person or confound the dignity of Victoria. The prince's birth map is also an illustration of Pluto and Uranus in SQUARE, and his respect for Victoria's personality again dramatizes the subtle social sensitiveness well ahead of his time.
PLUTO AND URANUS IN A TRINE ASPECT indicate an almost intemperate determination to go the way of impulse, or [419] of the private enjoyment of the new privileges created through the expanding cultures on every hand, and to justify the self by demanding a freedom from all possible control. The philosophy of life involves a rational existentialism of some sort, or a recognition of reality in its aberrations as the guarantee of its ultimate wholeness. An example is to be seen in the chart of Maria Callas, and attention has been drawn to her studied demand that she be considered quite exempt from normal regulation and responsibility.
Pluto and Neptune do not form the TRINE or OPPOSITION ASPECTS within the century and a half for which astrological tables of any appreciable reliability may be obtained.
PLUTO AND URANUS IN AN OPPOSITION ASPECT indicate a creative restlessness or a reaching out for the illimitable, and any justification of being is found in some useful application of the endlessness of resource and stimulation that man is discovering with every widening of his horizons. The philosophy of life is a rationalization of chance, or change itself, as the real intimation both of a divine existence and of man's ultimate powers. An illustration is found in the NATIVITY of Edgar Bergen. His framing of himself in this expanding picture of things-to-be has been seen in the evolution of his impish Charlie McCarthy or his profitable self-projection in a wholly imaginative self-fulfillment of the moment.
For a practical and everyday understanding of the transcendental fulfillment in the case of Prince Charles it may be noted that his Pluto lies in the HOUSE of IDENTITY, the SIGN of ASSURANCE and a degree symbolized by a nonvested [420] church choir. In the reduction of this horoscopic formula to a statement that is both accurate insight and simple explanation, in the framework of the over-all perspective, the astrologer may observe that (1) in CIRCUMSTANCES the fulfillment through the self-transcendence is by an enhancement of everything at the center of self or in the accentuation of the individuality very strictly in its own terms, (2) in FUNCTION this creative orientation of the self into patterns of eternal significance carries an invulnerable strength that it can feel is supported by every facet of life itself, and (3) in any passing or recurrent focus of the moment the self has no need of exterior trappings or superficial investiture but may perform its own song of accomplishment with a fullthroated enlistment of every facet of its own being. All this may be summarized by saying that the prince for the asking has the magic of a special presence.
