THE OVER-ALL PERSPECTIVE

The more detailed technique of horoscope interpretation to which these final pages are devoted, known conveniently as the sixteen-point analysis, consists of a consideration of (1) the phases of character and (2) the complementary areas of experience for which each in a logical order of the ten PLANETS, the two nodes of the moon, the PART OF FORTUNE, the ASCENDANT and the individually determined SIGNIFICATORS of marriage and vocation offer particular DELINEATION. Obviously the best possible procedure in illustrating the method would be to carry the interpretation of a single NATIVITY through the sixteen steps, as in contrast with the exposition of the factors needed in building an over-all perspective. A variety of horoscopes was needed to illustrate the fundamental differences found of necessity in different people. Now the turn is to considerations that concern everybody, or the elements of character and experience through which various individuals tend to be alike rather than appreciably distinct from each other. In the explanations to come there will be further references to NATIVES other than the one chosen for particular attention, but this is because of convenience in total exposition and it will be minimal.

An example horoscope for the sixteen-point analysis should be provided by a NATIVE prominent enough to make it easy to get any desired information about his life, [306] and who by the same token is not likely to fade from view or interest before the text has outlived its usefulness. In astrological tradition it has been the usual procedure to analyze the ruler of the country, or some equivalent figure with an established place in history, and that course will be followed here in a measure. In addition it is necessary that the illustrative NATIVITY permit Pluto to have a full part of the scheme of things or that the time of birth be recent enough so that this most recently discovered of the PLANETS may have a recognizable manifestation in actual experience. Obviously there should be no real question of the preciseness of the natal data. In the light of these considerations the NATIVITY of Charles, the present Prince of Wales, has been selected. He was born in Buckingham Palace in London on November 14, 1948, at 9:14 p.m. Greenwich mean time.

Here is a young man who lives in a highly delimited physical and psychological environment. His actions and reactions will be conditioned rigorously, since he must be prepared for his anticipated ascension to the throne occupied by his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. There may not be any great knowledge of the intimacies of his days as yet, but there is a wide understanding of the general pattern of expectation in which he must live. Whether he likes it or not, he carries the weight of tradition established for itself by the House of Windsor. His family endowment, with its definitive or royal morality, provides a fundamental outline of the lines along which his character will tend to develop almost by necessity. There is the particular social framework that cradles whatever he can be presumed to have inherited genetically. [307]

As a start in building the over-all perspective the NATURAL DISPOSITION of Prince Charles is observed to be indicated by CARDINAL SIGNS. On the basis of the exposition in Chapter One this indicates an untiring projection of the self into experience, in consistent disregard of either consequences or the convenience of others. There is an uninhibited restlessness, together with an almost constant and immediate dependence on situations and critical issues. The NATIVE tends to be ambitious rather than adaptable, and opportunistic rather than calculating. Because the QUADRATURE emphasis is negative there is a characteristic ambivalence in his attitudes toward people, or in his personal loyalties, and also in his individual philosophy or in connection with the psychological criteria by which he weighs his actions and reactions in his own mind. These basic conflicts operate to intensify a craving for excitement, and also and more importantly for the individual recognition such as in his case will facilitate his self-realization as the British ruler-to-be.

By TEMPERAMENT TYPE Prince Charles is LOCOMOTIVE. It has been seen in Chapter Two that the individual of this horoscopic pattern requires a continual opportunity for employing his special capacities, or gaining appreciation for them, and that his self-confidence pyramids itself in and through his own experience. Under his basic TRINE emphasis he is inclined to an unreasonable drive for personal advantage, and an almost undiscriminating desire for success and power. His is the species of individuality that when frustrated may create the rebel who at times can prove very dangerous in his attack on existing institutions but who while capable of pursuing [308] quixotic and even ridiculous ends yet can reach superb heights as a reformer. The moon is in HIGH FOCUS as the CUTTING PLANET, and it reveals a dominating and characteristic intensity through which every other phase of the being is filtered or refined.

Thus the astrological portrait begins to get definition, but this must be kept in the framework of the NATIVE'S particular background. In an approach therefore to an over-all appraisal of the family factor it is interesting to note that the prince's granduncle, who was Edward VIII and abdicated to become the Duke of Windsor, also has the moon in HIGH FOCUS. This reveals the intensity that was not to be resisted once he made the choice for the woman rather than the throne. In the case of Prince Charles' mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who in her early years was schooled carefully in preparation for her future role and who has proceeded to fulfill it with grace and effectiveness, there is no HIGH-FOCUS PLANET. In consequence there is not the same tendency to unyielding self-expression in her personal career, even if she is held to relatively rigid patterns of act and reaction through her royal position. Hence the dramatic fervor of her son's execution of his ideas and desires may never be as well understood by her as they would be by the granduncle.

The MODE OF SELF-INTEGRATION is established for Prince Charles by major ASPECTS between the positive and negative SIGNIFICATORS of MOTIVATION and EFFICIENCY. In Chapter Three this species of self-ordering has been found to be an accentuation of pure ACTIVITY, or a tendency to rise above all petty inhibition and conditioning in the face of confusion or difficulty. With this INDICATION a [309] NATIVE is under the necessity of acting or reacting entirely as his own immediate situation seems to him to dictate. He fares best as he makes life an adventure or a game, such as presents a continual challenge to his wits and personal resources. His manner of integrating himself at core is disjunctive or characterized by high selectivity and an ever-effective analysis or grasp of his momentary approach to reality. Thus he is not inclined to reach out in a host of different directions, seeking to bring what concerns him to a point of pertinency, but rather he depends on the basic adequacy of his choices. He finds experience a matter of piecing together the pertinencies available at hand when it comes to any particular puzzle of the moment. He works from the center of himself outwardly instead of from the outer world towards his own inwardness, and in this he is personal or impersonal as the occasion suits and he considers things subjectively or objectively as his convenience may suggest.

In rounding out the over-all perspective for the sixteen-point analysis at least two DETERMINATORS OF FOCAL EMPHASIS should be identified. These have had detailed exposition in Chapter Four, and in general the ones taken as pertinent should be those that have the greatest astrological strength or seem likely to have the greatest importance in the particular NATIVITY. Selection must depend on experience ultimately, since there are altogether too many variables in astrological INDICATION for any arbitrary ranking of the focal considerations to be more than a strait jacket as far as the judgment is concerned. In case of any doubt as to the relative significance of these DETERMINATORS, the order of presentation in this text may be [310] followed with advantage if only the astrologer is careful not to subordinate the NEGATIVE DYNAMIC and the SOLE DISPOSITOR unduly.

In the horoscope of Prince Charles a T CROSS is possible by a TRANSLATION OF LIGHT of four degrees, but it is not strong since the mediating SQUARE is within normal ORB by less than half a degree. It subordinates the HIGH-FOCUS moon to the RISING Pluto which then stands in POINT FOCUS. What becomes a matter of refined astrological judgment is whether the DIGNITIES of the LESSER LIGHT as ELEVATED PLANET and in its EXALTATION should be diminished in the over-all perspective, in view of the completely public life to be demanded of this NATIVE. If Pluto is to be given a fundamental vital importance, over and above its DIGNITY in the ASCENDANT, its SQUARE with the GREATER LIGHT is much closer than the one with the mediating Mercury that would be involved in a COSMIC CROSS and it is far better to accept a TRIGGER as the INDICATOR of the practical or everyday drive of the life. While the moon in HIGH FOCUS would be expected to form any TRIGGER, in a case where the nonacceptance of a T CROSS permits the CONFIGURATION, the moon makes no SQUARE ASPECT with any of the PLANETS and so can surrender the possibility to Pluto. In this way the LESSER LIGHT is left as principal SIGNIFICATOR of the role the prince must play as the symbolical head or myth figure of the British Commonwealth, and Pluto with its DIGNITIES as RISING and STATIONARY can be recognized justifiably in its special role as DELINEATING a more personal and psychological focus for the NATIVE'S efforts. In over-all view the prince thereupon is revealed as particularly representative of the elements coming into [311] effectiveness in human character and institutions since 1930.

There is a GRAND TRINE established by normal ORBS, and it might seem to be of less than usual significance in the general perspective since it is formed ACROSS THE LINE OF THE SIGNS and thus provides no TRIPLICITY emphasis. The TRINE factor of self-realization operates primarily through the highly personal equilibrium shown by the delimiting ASPECT of the LOCOMOTIVE pattern, however, and in that fact is INDICATION of a personality at work in some exceptional development and fulfillment of itself rather than in the more usual self-manifestation in a predetermined SCOPE OF EXPERIENCE. If the COSMIC TRIANGLE is taken in the larger perspective made possible by an acceptance of excess ORBS, or including Pluto as well as Saturn, there is a rather dramatic attestation of the unusual potentialities of the horoscope. Pluto in wide ASPECT with the moon is closer to the TRINE than the SQUARE by two degrees, and in consequence has more mundane association with the GRAND TRINE than the COSMIC CROSS that already has been rejected in favor of a TRIGGER as vital to this individual destiny. The clear dominance of the TRINE or personal type of equilibrium in the life is strengthened in the fact that the COSMIC TRIANGLE with the use of excess ORBS of a degree and a half and three degrees and a half respectively comprises (1) the moon in HIGH FOCUS that gives emphasis to the place of the NATIVE in society's general scheme of things, (2) Pluto that by TRIGGER stress shows the exceptionally individualistic manner of the NATIVE'S conscious self-direction, and (3) Jupiter that as the PLANET of positive MOTIVATION or deliberate self-projection into [312] experience has an equivalent astrological importance in the NATIVITY. Jupiter does not have HIGH-FOCUS or TRIGGER emphasis but the only QUINTILE in the wheel is created by the APPLICATION of Venus to this PLANET, and the only SEPTILE by Mercury APPLYING similarly. Thus Jupiter reveals a personality accentuated through a TALENT for the APPRECIATION of the psychological assets of selfhood and an uncompromising FATALITY or irrevocability of MIND when it comes to their administration, such as can be expected to continue in continual balancing with the factors of the social place in the world of the ruler-to-be and of the new sort of individualism with which he can be expected to accept his role.

A third and helpful detail of focal determination is provided in the PREPONDERANCE of PLANETS in ANGULAR HOUSES, taken in connection with the complete absence of PLANETS in CADENT HOUSES. Here is INDICATION that the NATIVE on the superficial side of affairs will not be inclined to lean more than necessary on the resources of his heritage, but that instead he will tend to face issues and meet demands on him in original fashion or entirely as the situation of the moment may suggest. As far as the deeper necessities of his make-up are concerned he may be expected to dismiss everyday direction when he is able to do so, and to select his own foundation of substance and values as his experience shapes his attitudes and determines his judgment. In general it is to be noted that he is likely to be left quite free to develop the potentials indicated by the triggering Pluto in his ASCENDANT. He probably will be able to cut across most of the more conventional and persisting lines of human act and attitude [313] established long before the discovery of these new PLANETS.

A fourth and no less significant detail of FOCAL DETERMINATION in this NATIVITY is the PREPONDERANCE of SEXTILES, with seven to be seen in comparison with four TRINES and three each of CONJUNCTIONS, OPPOSITIONS and SQUARES. Here is testimony to the fact that the fundamental act-of-self of the young prince, either as naïve self-expression or more sophisticated self-direction, is the often spectacular self-refining and essentially organizing capacity of an original sort that has been seen in the case of Nietzsche and that philosopher's ultimately tragic effort to demonstrate and further the eternal dignity of human nature. It becomes obvious that any competent astrological analysis of the character and prospects of the heir to the British crown cannot accept him as merely another representative of the House of Windsor, maturing in the more or less established groove. In over-all perspective Prince Charles must be seen rather as a potentially unique and very significant contributor to the progress of the race, under the particular genius of the emphasized Pluto.
